  1. While exploring San Antonio Bank, a bank of coral reefs found northwest of the Peninsula of Guanahacabibes in Pinar del RΓ­o Province, Cuba, scientists made several discoveries. In an area that had not been previously well explored, rather than finding the expected sand, sponges, and sparse coral, they encountered a healthy ecosystem that included huge plate corals, sponges, fishes, and other animals, some previously unknown to science. This photo shows a giant barrel #sponge (Xestospongia muta) that was common in the upper mesophotic zone at San Antonio Bank.
